typographic history in stone

I lived in the southwest for a few years and had the pleasure of visiting several amazing national parks and Native American sites. El Morro, a national park in New Mexico, was one of my favorites, A. and I visited twice and each time I found something new.

El Morro is the site of an ancient campsite found at the base of a sandstone bluff. Travelers would stop at El Morro for it's watering hole, a welcome rest in the dry climate. Hundreds of ancient petroglyphs and signatures are left at the site; recording all the visitors over time.

A history of written form is found on this rock; it is truly a spectacle. As a lover of type it makes me speechless to view ancient pictographs through modern letterforms as we know them. The inscription above is from 1709.

The craft of the carvings are amazing too, the precision of the P. Gilmer from 1859!

If you are ever in New Mexico I highly suggest a trip to this park and the surrounding area. The natural beauty and history is quite a treat.
